If so, the Métis Nation of Ontario
may be able to assist you through our new funding program
for Métis students. The program is designed to assist
Métis students from Ontario who are interested in becoming
a health professional or who are currently involved in health
career related programs.
This exciting funding opportunity is available
through the Métis Health Human Resources Initiative
which is a four year national program funded by Health Canada.
Based on our best knowledge and understanding
of population size, there are not enough Métis working
in our health care system. Our goals include creating a representative
workforce which includes appropriate numbers of Métis
physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists, dentists,
and other health care providers to be responsive to the unique
and diverse needs of Métis people.
All
Applications will be carefully assessed by the following criteria:
- Application
fully completed
- For
scholarship program – academic achievement
- Potential
for success (community leadership, extracurricular involvement)
- Career
aspirations include working with Métis currently
and in the future
- Involvement
in Métis community, volunteerism and cultural activities
- Positive
letters of support from Métis community member and
personal reference
Please note that while there are established criteria for
approval of an application, the philosophy of the MNO is to
be as flexible and supportive as possible in order to encourage
those students that are experiencing hardships in their lives
to realize their dreams of becoming a health professional.
The ultimate goal of the Health Careers Support Program is
to double the number of Métis health care workers.
In order to reach this goal, the MNO will strive to remove
as many obstacles as possible that have impeded Métis
people from achieving the highest level of accreditation possible.
With this in mind, the MNO is open to any logical, reasonable
and verifiable plan of achieving an end goal which may take
a number of years to accomplish. For MNO to consider special
circumstances, it will be incumbent upon all applicants to
provide a workplan demonstrating what they wish to achieve
and the steps required to get there over a period of time.
Such plans deemed to be credible would open the door to MNO
supporting even part-time courses leading to full-time enrolment.
