TORONTO -- In his President’s address, Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) President Gary Lipinski, spoke of wanting “to enhance MNO’s ability to further assist Métis people…” in several areas including education, and identified this key priority in a recent meeting with the Honourable Kathleen Wynne, Ontario Minister of Education (MOE).

As an educator himself, President Lipinski shared his personal appreciation for the positive work of the Ministry and Minister and for their genuine commitment and ongoing improvements in the Ontario education system.
“There is a great need to improve Métis education outcomes and to ensure the Métis voice is clearly heard in all facets of the education system in order to improve the quality of life of Métis children, families and communities in the province,” said Lipinski.

The Minister clearly recognized MNO’s commitment to strengthening education in Ontario and the existence of shared objectives and priorities. Minister Wynne discussed the need to capitalize on these valuable opportunities to move the education agenda forward. President Lipinski identified the importance of the ongoing engagement with the Ministry, school boards and other education stakeholders but equally addressed the existing limitations to fully engage Métis communities, parents and students.

MNO tabled with the Minister a set of documents which included, a draft copy of the Ontario – MNO Framework agreement, a draft memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the MOE and MNO, and a proposal for investment in student success. The Minister committed to further engagement and a full review of all materials submitted.
