The mission of the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) Early Learning and Child Care Program (ELCC) is to improve access to culturally grounded early learning opportunities for Métis individuals, families, and the Métis community as a whole. We do this by promoting and fostering community development and providing the care and support necessary to meet the fundamental needs of MNO citizens. On March 6, 2019 in Ottawa, Ontario the MNO took a historic step forward in improving the lives of Métis families and children. On this date the MNO signed the historic Canada-Métis Nation Early Learning and Child Care Accord. This Accord, which was co-developed with the Federal Government, invests more than $45 million over the next 10 years in early learning and child care services through the MNO.
The signing of this Accord and the funding commitment along with it has enabled the MNO to design and deliver early learning and child care services and programs for Ontario Métis children and families. It has also provided the MNO with the right and the ability to determine its own early learning and child care priorities and develop new and culturally relevant programs and services for Métis families and children. From the Accord, the MNO has developed the ELCC Program. The MNO will continue to work to provide greater access to ELCC services for Métis communities and families and provide opportunities for Métis children to thrive and grow within their culture.
This includes:
- Greater access to ELCC services for Métis communities and families available through the MNO
- Access to Métis-specific Early Learning and Child Care programming
Create safe spaces for Métis children and families within the current early year’s landscape - Provide opportunities for Métis children to learn off the land and grow within their culture
